For spa divas, finding new and interesting treatments can be a challenge. But the next time you’re in San Diego and looking for something new to indulge in check out the only five star property in the area, The Grand Del Mar and it’s spa.
Just rated in the top five spas in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure Magazine, the Grand Del Mar Spa befits its location at the only five diamond property in San Diego. The 21,000 sq. ft. spa carries on the resort’s Mediterranean feel with Renaissance inspired décor and a focus on renewal and rebirth in its treatments. If you’re looking for the unusual, then the spa’s signature service, Renaissance, is for you.
The service is conducted in a large treatment room big enough for the free-float bed, shower and massage table needed. It begins with the therapist applying mineral-rich mud. But this isn’t your ordinary body wrap. Instead it takes place on a special free-float bed and when the mud application is done I’m wrapped in a soft layer of plastic and the table supporting me on the bed is lowered and I’m free floating. It’s a weightless feel designed to evoke latent memories (I suppose) of being in the womb. From a therapeutic perspective the warmth of the bed and the wrap helps the mud penetrate the skin for optimal results while it also promotes circulation and the opening of the pores. While I’m floating the therapist does some gentle compressions on my body which creates a pleasant wave like sensation in the bed. I nearly fall asleep, something that doesn’t happen too often for me at the spa. After 20 minutes I’m washing off the mud in a shower featuring a rain shower and Swiss Shower. Fully relaxed, the massage starts with the therapist using a mix of gentle rocking movements, and the deeper pressure I request to get at my many knots.
After the service I relax in the graciously decorated women’s lounge and partake in the mini-muffins and dry fruit while reading some magazines on the terrace. The locker room features a Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna so plan to devote the day to relaxing and rejuvenating. Renaissance is 90 minutes $320/week, $330/weekend.
