Ritz Carlton is a brand associated with luxury, but did you also know it’s a brand that it’s associated with giving back?
A winner of Conde Naste Traveler’s World Savers Award in 2012, the 79 properties of Ritz Carlton have figured out a way to combine a five-star vacation experience with philanthropy, resulting in a hotel chain that travelers can be proud to stay in.
One of the programs the Ritz offers is its Give Back Getaways, half-day voluntourism programs where guests can give back. The Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain Resort in Tucson will soon launch its initiative in conjunction with Sleeping Frog Farm, a local farm that dovetails with the property’s focus on local and sustainable food.
The Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain is arguably the most luxurious property in Tucson. Nestled in the Tortolita Mountains in the Northwest corner of the city the resort takes advantage of its surroundings offering more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails, tours to the nearby Indian petrogyphs, and even a program where guests can get a taste of Old West through cattle penning. All of that is in addition to more standard offerings like tennis, golf and swimming. The property is home to the annual World Gof Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.
The Ritz features 253 guest rooms and suites appointed with luxury linens by Frette, a spa-like bathroom and views of either mountains, the Tortolita Foothills or Wild Burro Canyon.
I arrived at the resort around dusk and was drawn out of my room by the haunting sound of a Native American flute. In the lobby I discovered that a flutist, perched in the mountains, was mesmerizing the crowd that had gathered at the indoor/outdoor lounge Ignite. I pull up a seat by the crowded fire pit and drank it in. I decided to have dinner fireside when I found out that the kitchen turns into a sushi bar on the weekends. As a bonus, when the flute music ended a duo of Spanish guitarists took his place and strummed for the rest of the night.
The next morning I sampled the cold breakfast buffet at CORE Kitchen & Wine Bar. I’m impressed that the offerings feature Greek yogurt with flax seeds, hemp seeds and chia seeds for toppings. Now that truly is a breakfast of champions!
Anytime I see a pool that offers stationary, floating chaises in the pool, I can’t resist. I spent part of the day simply lounging in the pool enjoying the comfortable sunny weather and catching up on the last “Fifty Shades” book. For those who want to continue the relaxation ,head to the spa and try one of the holistic treatments designed to balance the body. Lunch in the spa café offers the perfect light fare for such a lazy day.
While the Ritz is known for luxury, it also caters to families with extensive children’s programming through its Dove Mountain Ranger program where little ones can explore the flora and fauna of the area, see desert creatures and bugs and explore Native American culture.
If you’re looking for a luxurious desert getaway, you can’t beat the Ritz.
