A beach day in the desert? Thanks to the Fairmont Scottsdale you can close out the summer with your toes in the sand with Labor Day at Sunset Beach.
I’ll admit that ever since it opened to kick off summer I had been dying to stay in the new rooms that rim Sunset Beach and finally had the chance to do so.
The five-diamond property is celebrating the end of summer with a Caribbean cruise theme. You’ll be greeted by valets in sailor hats and then can either take (or try and avoid) the obligatory getting on board picture.
My beach view room was done in a very contemporary take on Southwest design. Muted neutral tones and textural elements, including locally handcrafted Thunderbird woven art. I love the stackable sliding glass doors that open up to a balcony, which is the perfect spot for enjoying a glass of wine while watching the fireworks that happen every Saturday during the summer (and on Friday during Labor Day weekend).
The resort has six pools, but Sunset Beach is by far the most popular. To get a good spot, try and hit the sand early. It’s a busy scene that gets even more festive with children’s activities like Mermaid University and Swashbuckler Academy. While the atmosphere is upbeat and lively, it’s certainly not the most romantic poolside experience on property! If you’re trying to enjoy some quality time with your sweetie this holiday opt for a private cabana around Princess Pool instead. Try a Bermuda banana hurricane and laze away while listening to the steel drum band. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday!
For the ultimate romantic gesture, couples can renew their vows for free over Labor Day Weekend.
Stick to the Caribbean theme and head to Toro Latin Restaurant & Bar, featuring over 150 rums, for a dinner featuring ceviches and sushi.
At night Sunset Beach turns into a movie theater with dive-in movies with a family theme. I catch a bit of Snow White from my balcony. The Sonoran Splash pool hosts a Techno Glo Party featuring water slides with black lights, lasers, fog machines and a DJ spinning the hottest hits.
Thankfully, the great summer hotel rates Scottsdale is known for is still valid over Labor Day. Rates start at $199 per night for the Sip, Savor & Sand package that includes a $50 daily credit for dining, spa or the Trailblazers Kids Club. As an added bonus, guests may lounge a little longer with a complimentary late checkout of 4 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2016.
