No Digital Detox!
While much has been made of digital detoxing, I start my wellness weekend just the opposite, trying out the Four Seasons new app to check in to the hotel before I even leave my house.
After downloading the free app, I punched in my confirmation number and was able to request a check-in time and list special requests (quiet location). I asked to check-in at 1:30, before the standard check-in time, and was told they would try and accommodate and I could have an email sent to me when the room was ready. At 1pm I received that email. When I pulled up to the valet, the keys to my room were waiting for me. Easy Peasy.
The App can be used to order in-room dining, make dining reservations, explore the local area and to check out. It works for any Four Seasons property worldwide.
When I enter my Desert View Casita Room I’m greeted with the Sonoran Desert Mountain landscape literally a step from my patio. For Global Wellness Day at the Four Seasons Scottsdale, a Detox water, fresh local peaches, and a stone fruit bread were left for me to enjoy.
Healthy Fine Dining
Now you might think dinner at Talavera, the Four Seasons gourmet restaurant, helmed by one of the nicest chefs in the Valley, Mel Mecinas (catch him at the James Beard House next month!) wouldn’t be Global Wellness Day and Travel Diet friendly, but you’d be wrong. Remember one principle of The Travel Diet is that anyplace can be tweaked to be healthy.
I order some wine (resveratrol!) and start with a chilled sweet pea and mint soup, minus the crème freche, followed by the Diver Scallops with fava beans and chanterelle mushrooms done in light butter.
Global Wellness Day!
Global Wellness Day kicks off early the next morning with a complimentary yoga class on the Fountain Terrace lawn. Thankfully, the sizzling Arizona sun is still waking up as our class of about 20 salutes it with our salutations.
With an appetite worked up, my friend and I head to Proof, the more casual restaurant on property to partake in a special Global Wellness Day menu. Egg white frittata, smoked salmon and an indulgent gluten free chocolate muffin make the way onto our table. Don’t worry, we balanced the decadent chocolate with some fresh-pressed detox juices.
I hit the gym before heading to the spa for the signature Four Seasons in One treatment…sort of.
After talking to the therapist about my super tight neck and shoulders and a recent killer headache, we decide to put more focus on massage than the treatment, that normally features a short massage with a vanilla oil to symbolize summer, a scrub and application of pumpkin butter on the back for fall, a wintergreen scrub and butter on the front of the body for winter and an herbal hair oil for a neck and scalp massage for spring, does.
My totally customized Four Seasons in One, actually becomes a long summer, a short fall and winter and average spring. Using deep pressure, therapist Leslie works out the knots she seems to find in every muscle of my back and neck. She does a bit of fall with a scrub on my back and the pumpkin butter on my legs. The massage continues after I flip over and she works in a brief winter (my kind of winter) with a scrub on my arms. The treatment concludes with some more neck work and a hydrating hair oil. Bliss. This is what Global Wellness Day is all about!
